Some others not mentioned yet:

1. Twin Peaks (tv series). Such a mix of Bob's creepiness and Agent Cooper's awesomeness.

2. Diabolique (50's french version. please, please don't watch the 90's version with Sharon Stone) I think this is the earliest made film that's actually scary. Rent it tonight.

3. 2001: A Space Oddysey. Not the kind of thing that normally comes to mind when thinking "scary", but, like he did later with The Shining, Kubrick creates a masterpiece of mood. This one particularly shows the suspense and claustrophobia of silence.

4. The Vanishing (Dutch/French version, not the English one with Keifer Sutherland). A couple on a vacation in France stop at a gas station. The wife goes inside while the husband is filling up the tank. She never comes back out. Soooo good.

5. Le Boucher. The French New-wave's version of a slasher film.

5. I usually don't like slasher gore-fests, but if we're talking moster movies with the constant threat of immanent dismemberment and/or playing host of a parasiting killing machine, I'm putting my money on Aliens. In the words of Bill Paxton: "A one way road to Hell, Goin' Down!!!"
