Favorite scary movies:

1. Dawn of the Dead, the original.

2. Evil Dead 2

3. The Devil's Backbone. Anybody interested in seeing Pan's Labirynth has got to see this. Brilliant. (same director.)

I just saw the film "Peeping Tom" (1960). Great disturbing movie much in the same vein as Psycho or any other Hitchcock classic.

Also the movie "Tesis" (1996) is very scary. Both deal with the making of snuff films which is not something I would generally watch but these two films are well done.

Some others not mentioned yet:

1. Twin Peaks (tv series). Such a mix of Bob's creepiness and Agent Cooper's awesomeness.

2. Diabolique (50's french version. please, please don't watch the 90's version with Sharon Stone) I think this is the earliest made film that's actually scary. Rent it tonight.

3. 2001: A Space Oddysey. Not the kind of thing that normally comes to mind when thinking "scary", but, like he did later with The Shining, Kubrick creates a masterpiece of mood. This one particularly shows the suspense and claustrophobia of silence.

4. The Vanishing (Dutch/French version, not the English one with Keifer Sutherland). A couple on a vacation in France stop at a gas station. The wife goes inside while the husband is filling up the tank. She never comes back out. Soooo good.

5. Le Boucher. The French New-wave's version of a slasher film.

5. I usually don't like slasher gore-fests, but if we're talking moster movies with the constant threat of immanent dismemberment and/or playing host of a parasiting killing machine, I'm putting my money on Aliens. In the words of Bill Paxton: "A one way road to Hell, Goin' Down!!!"
