Ricky Gervais meets Larry David

Hey guys,

Here is an hour long discussion between Ricky Gervais and Larry David. Really, really good stuff.

This was really fun to watch. I think Larry David is really fascinating. He has tapped into a kind of comedy that is not that funny on paper, but plays out brilliantly without laughter. I think this is why TV executives cannot duplicate it and why most of the Seinfeld spinoffs have failed. I guess he perfected this with Seinfeld and then really distilled and purified it in Curb. You can see all the Seinfeld characters are still alive in the Larry David of the show. The show feels much more personal this way rather than the three ring circus that Seinfeld can be, and it's much more potent.
I thought it was interesting when Ricky pointed out that he agreed with most of the things that Larry's character said on the show. That his voice really was the voice of sanity or honesty and that the only outrageous thing about Larry David is that he refuses to compromise with anyone. On some level, everyone regrets having to compromise in everyday life to accomodate others. In this light, Larry's character is a source of release in addition to laughing.
Larry uses dramatic conflict and irony to summon laughs rather than jokes or wit. Granted there are some screwball antics that happen on the show.

Thank you so much for this Bryan, it is fantastic. I could go on and on about how much I loved watching this but instead I'll just say thanks, again.
