Flirting With Disaster

I saw this David O. Russell comedy several years ago at my brothers. I loved it. Watched it again this past week and loved it again. Great ensemble cast led by Ben Stiller and Patricia Arquette. Alan Alda and Lily Tomlin were especially hilarious.

I'd say this is one of the best "straight" comedies to come out of the nineties. (Alan Alda is in my other favorite nineties comedy - "Manhattan Murder Mystery")

Speaking of Alan Alda has anyone seen the original The In-laws?
One of the top three greatest seventies films. Also one of the funniest movies of all time. (The other two best seventies films are The Godfather and Jaws.)

I have not connected with O'Russell's movies for some reason. I didn't enjoy Three(Four) Kings or I Hart Huckabees. Flirting With Disaster was an interesting mix of natural performance and screwball comedy. To me the film was too aware of itself, much like a screwball comedy. This seemed to contrast with the acting style which was very natural and unaware. I felt the same way about Spanglish (although I liked Spanglish a little more). I thought Tea Leoni was amazing but I just couldn't identify with the movie as a whole. It felt like a foreign film to me. Having said this O'Russell definately seems to be seeking out new territory which is always admirable.
